Place your bets (Or faites vos jeux, as the Prince of Monte Carlo might have said)

Come to Halifax Playhouse Bar on Sunday March 12 for
A NIGHT AT THE RACES
operated by Steves Music Shows.
  • There will be a disco (but not too loud! Requests welcome), a half-time quiz, and eight races on the big screen for you to place your bets on and join the mounting excitement as each race nears its finish.
  • Bets are £1.00 a time, and the Tote divides half the stakes from each race between the winning tickets. The other half goes to Society funds.
  • If you want to own a horse, this will cost £2.00 (and you may buy as many as you like, and give them whatever names you like - within reason!). The winning owner for each race gets a bottle of bubbly and a racing cap.
  • If you want to sponsor a race for £20.00, we will name the race after you or what - or whoever - you suggest. We can advertise your business, next show, or anything else, during the course of the evening.

The evening begins at 7.30 with the first race at 8.00. No racing experience necessary - everythign is very simple and will be clearly explained. The Playhouse Bar will be open throughout. Tickets are £1.00, and will also serve as your first bet. You can buy them in advance (see Kathryn or Trevor at the above addresses) or pay at the door.

Come along and support the Society!

Farewell to Pfennig-Halbpfennig

Congratulations to everybody involved in The Grand Duke last November. Not only did it receive critical and public acclaim, but it drew some of our best audiences for some time, and Box Office takings were at record heights (OK - we did put the ticket price up a pound this year, but that doesn't account for everything). Particularly welcome was the number of people unfamiliar with G & S who came and enjoyed the show, and we hope that they will continue to support us.

We now have a very full concert season in prospect, before starting work for our triple bill in November. Steven Greenwood will be directing Trial by Jury and Richard Buxton will be taking his first steps as a director with Cox and Box and The Zoo. Colin Akers will again be in charge of our music, and auditions for principal parts will take place on the afternoon of Sunday April 30th. Watch this space for the venue, and get in touch with Kathryn if you want to be informed of audition pieces.

Club Night news

Please note that the dates of the Sorceror and Mikado club nights have now been exchanged. The Sorceror will now be our first Club Night of the season on Friday March 24, while The Mikado will be on Friday May 26.

The final Club Night on Friday June 16 will be Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld, in the amateur version by Hanmer and Park. We hope this will be as successful as other recent singalongs of non-G & S shows (The Arcadians, Merrie England and The Merry Widow), and we particularly welcome anybody who knows it already!

Subscriptions - a reminder

Sheila Simpson, Membership Secretary, would like to remind members that subscriptions for 2006/2007 are due at the beginning of April, and should be paid if possible at or before the A.G.M. The subscription remains at £10.00 for this year (£5.00 for Junior Members).
