Springtime is concert time

Eveyone is welcome to come and join the chorus for the Show Club Nights, and don't forget the pot-pourri on May 16th. Members, patrons, or anyone else who reads this Newsletter, are all welcome to come along and sing, recite, juggle, saw a lady in half .. Just let Trevor Roberts know what you want to do.

Another opening, another show ...

The Pirates sailed into the distance three months ago, after a very successful run that saw the Society make its first surplus on a show for ten years (since the last time we did Pirates, in fact). Thanks to all who took part, on stage or off.

It's now time to look forward to November, when we will be presenting The Sorcerer from Tuesday 4th to Saturday 8th. We are delighted that Margaret Schofield has accepted our invitation to return as producer, and we welcome Maureen Earl who will be taking charge of our music for the first time. Maureen is well known to many of us. She has been Musical Director of Aireborough G & S for a number of years, and before that conducted Bradford G & S shows at the Alhambra. She has also been an invited guest on several of our audition panels, and we are sure everyone will make her welcome.

Auditions for The Sorceror will provisionally be held on the afternoon of Sunday May 4th at All Saints Church Hall. Audition forms and lists of pieces should be available in mid-March. Please contact Kathryn Buxton if you have any queries

It is appropriate at this point to bid au revoir (but not goodbye) to Colin Akers, who is taking some time off after serving the Society as pianist and conductor for nearly twenty years. Who now can imagine the quiet lad who advertised in the Huddersfield Examiner as a pianist looking for somewhere to play? He served his apprenticeship under Jim Newby on both piano and flute, and was ready to take over on the rostrum for Yeomen in 2000. He has developed a distinctive rehearsal style, with definite interpretative ideas. Catherine's fingers may now be able to slow down just a little from time to time. We wish Colin a happy break with Jackie and the children, but will be sure to see him back now and again (in fact he's playing for our concert in Silsden in March).

A G M

The Annual General Meeting of the Society will be at All Saints Church Hall on Friday March 28th, starting at 7.45. Members and patrons will find relevant documents enclosed [with the paper copy of this newsletter].

Subscriptions will be due on April 1st. They remain at last year's rate, namely £15.00 for members and £7.50 for junior members and patrons. Please try to pay your subscription early, because it helps the Society's finances.

Other dates for your diary

There are lots of shows coming up which involve members and friends of the Society. Please let us know of any omissions so that we can put them on the website.

... and one that you may have missed. Mide Whitwam has just spent a week with Solent G & S performing Ruddigore at the Trinity Theatre, Cowes. He was apparently encased in a suit of armour for the second Act. Let's hope he cools off before joining us (with Kath) on his busman's holiday for our first three concerts. Hope to see you at one of them. Goodbye for now
