A record concert season

We're just coming up to our eighth concert of the regular season, the busiest season in recent years. And we haven't finished yet! There are two further concerts arranged for September:

The programme is likely to be largely the same as that for the spring concerts, with perhaps one or two "trailers" for the show.

There is also a concert on Saturday December 2 at Crosshills, Keighley. Keep an ear open for further details.

November is getting nearer

Auditions took place on April 30 for our Sullivan triple-bill in November, and the three shows have been cast as follows:

Booking forms will be available soon. The show will run from Tuesday November 7 to Saturday November 11, with a matinee on the Saturday. We have begun to look at the music at our Friday rehearsals, but there is stil ltime for new chorus members to join. If you know anyone who may be interested, get them to come along on a Friday and try us out.

A new face

Congratulations to Rachel and David Prosser and welcome to Naomi Ruth, who arrived on Tuesday May 16 at 8lb 5oz. She made her first Society appearance at the Mikado Club Night on May 26, and was easily the quietest member of the audience. The coarse acting will come later, evidently.

... we enjoy on Friday nights

Not necessarily the cherished rights, but perhaps the cherished flights (of fancy), or heights (of artistic ingenuity), or sights (for sore eyes). Our final Club Night of the season is coming up on Friday June 16, with a sing-along of Orpheus in the Underworld, in the Hanmer/Park amateur version. Anybody who already knows this piece will be doubly welcome!

We hope it will be a suitable round-off to what has been a very successful season, beginning with a packed house for The Sorcerer, with Emma Mills (Aline), Kelvyn Waites (Mr Wells) and Ian Hillis (Notary) making their Club Night debuts (Ian will be repeating his Notary with the Savoyards later in the year), and Robert Thurman making a welcome guest visit as Dr Daly. Though a couple of shows in the same week threatened to deplete the talent for our Pot-Pourri night, an enthusiastic audience was kept well entertained by a variety of musical and dramatic acts. The Mikado saw the return of David Ward in the title role, with an accent that took us all round the world (at least Colin Fine only took us all round Wales with his Ko-Ko) and we were very happy to welcome back Pat Castle as a memorable Katisha.

Cheers!

Two days after Orpheus, on Sunday June 18, there will be a wine-tasting evening in the Playhouse Bar, led by Leyland Smith. The evening will begin at 7.30, will include six wines to taste (you don't have to spit them out!), and will be interspersed with some suitable musical entertainment. Tickets are £5.00, available from Trevor Roberts.

What do you know?

Wakefield G & S are holding another Quiz Night on Tuesday June 27. Last year's event was very enjoyable, not least because we won. Graham Weston will no doubt set a very interesting and entertaining Quiz, and the evening will also include a sing-along Trial by Jury. We hope to send one or more teams of four, and anybody interested should contact Trevor or Kathryn.
