Concerts and Club Nights
Many thanks to all who took part in our concert season. The All Saints “premiere” took a record amount in the retiring collection, while the concerts at Emley, Denby Dale and Thornhill Lees were very enthusiastically received. Thanks also to Kelvyn Waites for organizing the buffet in the Green Dragon after the Emley concert, and to Penny and Joe McGoverin for their generous hospitality after we performed at Thornhill.
Plenty of coarse acting was in evidence at our Pirates and Zoo / Trial club nights, while the Pot-pourri provided its usual heady mix of poetry and song. It was good to hear Donald McLoughlin sing again, and thanks to Catherine Warwick for providing impeccable accompaniment at the drop of a hat.
Our remaining Club Night is My Fair Lady on July 10 th . Since there isn’t a great deal for the chorus in this show, we are planning to repeat several of the songs as sing-alongs for the chorus. We are also planning to share the songs among several soloists, rather than keep the same soloist for a character throughout. If there is any song you would particularly like to sing, please contact Kathryn Buxton at 01484-301291.
Roger Hurford
We were sorry to hear of Roger Hurford’s death earlier in the year. Roger had been a strong supporter of the Society, and took part in The Sorcerer in 1982 (as John Wellington Wells) as well as providing a memorable Tarara in our production of Utopia Ltd in 1989. He was also on our auditions panel on many occasions, providing knowledgeable and considered judgements which were a great help to less experienced panel members. We will miss him.
Stop Press - Congratulations
To Reg Horner, Life Vice-President and a former Business Manager of the Society, who was awarded an MBE in the recent Birthday Honours, for his services to the Sea Cadets.
A booking form for The Gondoliers is enclosed. Please start getting your friends to book as soon as possible. If you need more forms, please ask Kathryn Buxton and we’ll send some.
