The sausage rolls are on order, the champagne is on ice (not exactly Pommery ’74, but something fizzy, at least), and we’re two weeks from the first night. By now The Grand Duke has been set, and another two weeks of rehearsal should see it flowing nicely. If you haven’t booked your tickets yet, please get in touch with Steph (or the Playhouse Box Office after next weekend). Another booking form is enclosed to send in or pass on to your friends, relations and colleagues.
By now a group of members will have invaded the Piece Hall (on Saturday October 15) to press leaflets on unsuspecting members of the public. We are indebted to Paul Matthews and Peter Sugden for once more co-ordinating our publicity, and managing to secure various news items and photographs in the Courier. Any advertisement for the show that anyone can offer is still welcome. If you want a bundle of leaflets to give out at a concert or a meeting, please call either of the numbers above.
Jane Fellows led a gallant band of helpers to advertise the Society at Halifax Agricultural Show in a rainy Savile Park on August 13th. From the Friday evening, when they’d put up a canopy in the darkness after rehearsal, to mid-afternoon when it became clear that nobody else was going to risk the weather, they showed devotion beyond the call of duty. The Duke (Peter Sugden) and his various duchesses braved it out, and Jane managed to break even for us by imitating Little Buttercup and travelling round selling our eatables to other stallholders.
Once again the Cricket Match (September 11) was blessed with good weather, particularly for the all-important half-time tea. This time we shared our ground with overflow parking for a prestigious dog show in Manor Heath, but managed not to break any windscreens with extravagant shots. Good to see some new members coming along, as well as patron Leslie Thompson and his grandchildren. The result? Nobody could quite work it out. We’ll take along a laptop for next year.
In November 2006 we will be giving three for the price of one. The Society hasn’t presented a full staging of Trial by Jury since 1981 (although we have given semi-staged performances in concerts from time to time), and we have decided to accompany it with Cox and Box (last given in 1987 with Pirates) and The Zoo (1992, with Pinafore). Three librettists with one composer – a first for the Society.
