The last concert before the show is imminent. We're at St. Bernard's, Haley Hill, this Saturday night (September 23rd) with a 7.30 start. Watch out for further details of the concert on Saturday December 2nd at Crosshills, Keighley.
Thanks to those who made it to St. Andrew's, Mirfield, last Sunday (Sept 10th). Even though we were indoors during the sunniest Sunday afternoon in recent memory, we enjoyed a wonderful acoustic and entertained a good post-lunch crowd.
The librarian makes a plea for the return of all copies of the Merry Widow Waltz and The way you look tonight. We've finished performing them, and need to get all copies back to Wakefield Library. Any not returned will have to be paid for, so please get them back to Richard as soon as possible.
We're on the road (and the floor), with Trial by Jury and The Zoo taking up Wednesday and Friday nights for the next seven weeks. Cox, Box and Bouncer will fit their business in between. All Wednesdays and Fridays are at All Saints, and there will be a couple of rehearsals at Heath the week before the show.
Now is the time to start selling your tickets. Two booking forms are enclosed with this Newsletter, and more are available on request from either of the above addresses.
The show runs from Tuesday November 7 to Saturday November 11, with a matinee on the Saturday.
Orpheus in the Underworld finished off the Club Night season in rousing fashion. We had a good sprinkling of audience members who knew the piece, and some fine coarse acting from the principals. Roly Robertshaw was, of course, a model of dramatic splendour as Jupiter, and didn't do anything to lower the tone of the evening. Antonia Jno-Baptiste (Diana) came to join us from Batley G & S. She must have wondered what she was letting herself in for, but hung in till the end. Richard Buxton would like to apologise to any violinists in the audience. He wanted to study with Igor Oistrakh, but ended up with his cousin Igor Blimey.
Two days later, a fair number of us gathered in the Playhouse bar to hear Leyland Smith in his element, eloquently presenting a selection of wines for us to taste. A selection of suitable musical items rounded off a convivial evening.
The Society successfully defended its title at Wakefield G & S's Quiz Night on June 27, putting more useful funds into the coffers. If we keep this up regularly we might have to start paying tax on it. Congratulations to the winning quartet, and the second team did pretty well too.
A group of members enjoyed a summer walk in the fields around Shepley on July 2nd. The starting and finishing point was Jane Fellows' new house near the Sovereign, and we're grateful to Jane for hosting the post-walk cream tea. Naomi Prosser (6 weeks) was the youngest participant, and didn't seem a bit tired.
The cricket/rounders afternoon took place at Savile Park last Sunday (September 17th). Siobhan Akers (6½) was the demon bat at cricket and the demon bowler at rounders. We managed once again not to break any car windscreens, and the tea was well up to scratch.
There will be another joint sing at Bingley, with Bingley and Wakefield G & S Societies. It's planned for Saturday October 14th at Bingley Arts Centre (probably 7.30). We'll be deciding our input shortly, and details will be available from Kathryn or Trevor. If you haven't been to a previous Sing, do come along. It's good to socialise with our fellow Societies and it's a good work-out for the lungs.
We've had a note from Keith Flesher, a Life Vice-President of the Society whom a number of you will remember as accompanist until the mid 80's . He's now Musical Director of Leyburn G & S, who put on a concert performance each May.
They're doing The Sorcerer on May 12th and 19th next year, and are lookihng for an Alexis. Any tenor who'd like a trip into beautiful Wensleydale for three or four rehearsals (they rehearse once a month on Saturday afternoons) and a couple of concerts should get in touch with Keith at 01969-650156 or kandc.flesher@tiscali.co.uk. He'd be delighted to hear from you.
